According to McKinney, Texas police officers, on September 23, 2021 they responded to a report regarding someone who was suicidal at 2:25 p.m. on Redwood Drive, at a house near the Sam Rayburn Tollway and U.S. Highway 75.
When the officers tried to make contact with the man, the police say that the man came out of the house practically an hour later, and pointed a shotgun at the officers, leading to officers firing their weapons. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ash Duncan, the Clubs and News editor of The Lanier Times, gave their insight on the situation, “Why couldn’t the officers de- escalate the situation, and intervene before it came to the extremes? The person was supposedly supposed to be suicidal, and in need of help but was only met with violence which is aggravating.”
Another student gave her insight: “If they respond to a suicidal person’s house and they just wait around for an hour, what was the point of even going? They should have assessed the situation.”
“Maybe the suicidal victim wanted help from the police, but they just waited around. What if during that [one hour] period they didn’t wanna kill themselves, but wanted to die. They knew that pointing the gun would provoke the police to shoot him.”
Baili McCoy, a sophomore at Lanier high school, said, “I don’t know why they would just sit outside of someone’s house when somebody says they wanna harm themselves.”
California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) defines “suicide by cop” (SBC) as when a person ‘‘engages” in behavior which would lead a cop to draw their gun and shoot because of the context clues cops couldn’t pick up in the situation. Which means a person’s behavior leading a cop to think the only way they can assess the situation is to shoot.
Suicide by cop is more common than some would think. There has been a 33 percent increase in the rate of suicide from 1997 to 2017.
