An oil leak occurred on the coast of Huntington Beach on October 2nd, 2021. According to estimates, 120,000 to 144,000 gallons of crude oil was dumped into the water. The oil came from a pipeline four and a half miles from shore, and video footage from a diver shows that the origin of the leak was a 13-inch crack in a section of the 17.7 mile-long pipeline, which resulted in an 8,000 acre oil slick.
The spill had an almost instantaneous impact on the area around it. Oil was gushing around the beaches of Newport, killing fish and birds while harming many others. Animals on the beach were being lightly oiled, but even a small amount can have a significant impact over time.
When they eat food that has been contaminated by the oil, the oil gradually builds up in their system, making them sick.
Officials have described the spill as an environmental disaster since it has threatened fragile wetlands. In this area, commercial fishing is no longer illegal. Beach house owners, like those who own other city beaches, are affected by the damage to their properties as well.
The day of the spill is regarded to be one of the busiest days of the year. Beaches in Orange County are expected to be closed for months, scattered amounts of oil have been found on a number of other beaches. The reason for the spill is still being studied, but it is unknown when the beaches will be cleaned up. Only 5,544 gallons of oil have been retrieved so far, according to officials. Far from enough to undo any of the spill’s effects and get it closer to being completely cleaned up.
