Remembering Demaryius Thomas

“A Legend” is a title that takes a lifetime to earn for most people. Demaryius Thomas was one exception. Sadly, the world just lost this amazing person and football player that he was. Thomas blasted onto the scene as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket from 2007 to 2009. In those three years, he racked up 2,339 yards and 15 touchdowns. That was enough to be picked 22nd overall in the 2010 NFL draft. In his rookie season, he was only able to start two games resulting in only 283 yards and two touchdowns. His second season was a little bit better with him starting five games and racking up 551 yards and four touchdowns. However, 2012 is when everything turned around. Future hall of famer Peyton Manning was traded to the Denver Broncos and Demaryius quickly became his favorite target. Throughout 16 games that season, he amassed 1,400 yards with 10 touchdowns and helped the team to get to the divisional round. Unfortunately, the Broncos were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens in double overtime in a very hard-fought game. The next season, Demaryius had another 1,000 plus yard year. He led the team in receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. Denver went on to have a 13-3 record and ran their way through the AFC to make it to the Superbowl against the Seahawks where they were blown out by a score of 43-8.
2014 ended up being the best year of Thomas’ career as he had over 1,600 yards and 11 touchdowns to take his team to the Divisional round where they were knocked out by the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 24-13. Then, 2015 was the year that Demaryius Thomas truly earned a reputation of being one of the, if not the best, wide receivers at the time. Thomas hauled in 105 receptions for 1,304 yards and six touchdowns. The Broncos made the Super Bowl for the second time in a three-year span but this time, they were able to defeat the Carolina Panthers in a hard-fought game with a final of 24-10 which sadly ended the Manning era in Denver. In 2016, young quarterback Brock Osweiler took over. He spread the ball out a lot more while completing fewer passes which depleted Demaryius’ yards to just over 1,000. 2016 would be the last time Demaryius Thomas would have a season over 1,000 yards, putting an end to a five-year streak. In 2017, Brock Osweiler’s accuracy got even worse and Demaryius still managed to have 949 yards. The next season in 2018, Demaryius was traded halfway through the season to the Houston Texans. Overall that year, Thomas finished with a total of 677 yards. Houston let the legend walk following the 2018 season and Thomas ended up on the New York Jets. He hauled in a total of 36 receptions for 433 yards. Thomas retired at the end of that season after shattering almost every receiving record in Broncos history.
Though Demaryius’ historic football career was over, his philanthropy work was not. Demaryius continued to spread his faith and hope for the next generations by showing up at youth football camps and donating money to charities all the way up until December 9th, 2021. On that fateful day, the legend was found dead in his Roswell home. The official cause of death was said to be a “health issue”. Rest In Peace to a true legend. Fly High.
