For nearly two decades, Harry Potter has been a safe haven for viewers and readers of all ages. No matter where you are from or your age, everyone has heard the famous story of Harry Potter: the night he got the scar shaped like a lightning bolt on his forehead, how he saved the wizarding world without even trying, and how time and time again, he always beats He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, despite his struggles. Even if you have never read one of the books or seen any of the movies, the story of Harry Potter still provides a familiar and nostalgic feeling. When the news of the Harry Potter 20th Reunion: Return to Hogwarts first came to light, there were lots of mixed feelings amongst fans. Some weren’t sure the reunion would live up to its hype; others were just happy to see the cast back together. The reunion even brought up speculations as to what the reunion means for the future of Harry Potter: could they expect another movie about the next generation at Hogwarts, where Harry Potter and his friends are now parents, sending their own children off to Hogwarts? No matter what fans were expecting, the reunion of Harry Potter was a special and magical moment that fans will rewatch for years to come.
One of the moments in the reunion that stands out the most and probably brings the most viewers to tears was the golden trio reuniting. Harry Potter was, and still is, a life-changing series because of its storyline, but even more so because of the actors. Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe all grew up and changed together while working on set. They supported each other throughout filming and even after that. Being a child actor, especially for ten years, is not exactly a graceful process, due to missing out on a “normal” childhood and not getting to do what most kids their age do, but the cast certainly recaps their memories with extreme grace. There were so many emotions displayed between the three of them as they recapped both good times and bad. For instance, they once arranged a funeral for Emma Watson’s hamster. At the end of filming, they were practically siblings, and they will never forget the amazing time they spent with each other.
To add on, another beautiful moment in the reunion is when the actors paid tribute to their fellow actors who have passed away. One of the most iconic characters in Harry Potter is Severus Snape, who was played by Alan Rickman. Rickman brought the character to life on screen like nobody else could; it seemed like he was almost born just to play that role. The loss in the living cast members’ eyes could not be missed, and it was devastating that Rickman could not be there to reminisce on all the good times. Another prominent actor in Harry Potter who unfortunately passed away earlier last year was Helen McCrory, who played the role of Narcissa Malfoy. The fact that the director still made time to include them in the reunion and recognize how they played such a massive role in the film series just goes to show how all the actors on the set were truly family.
When all the former child actors saw each other all together in one room at the beginning of the reunion, you could see the pure joy in their eyes. They picked up conversation like no time had passed at all, especially not 20 years. To this day, James and Oliver Phelps, who played Fred and George Weasley, respectively, still refer to Bonnie Wright as their little sister. Fans of Harry Potter feel a certain sense of comfort in knowing that the actors of Harry Potter, who all grew up together, are still as close as they’ve ever been. Many Harry Potter fans grew up alongside the child actors, and hearing how the actors talk about what it was like on set, some fans felt that they could almost relate in a way. The reunion was a wonderful trip down memory lane and made it seem as though the series never ended.
“The Harry Potter series is absolutely breathtaking. Whether you’ve only watched the movies or only read the books, the experience is the same. The Harry Potter Reunion is such an amazing way to honor the series, and I will watch it again and again,” is how freshman, Abygail Mignott felt when asked about the reunion.
However, there was one extremely instrumental person when it came to the creation of Harry Potter, who was noticeably not in the reunion. J.K. Rowling was nowhere to be found in the reunion, and many thought it was due to controversy surrounding some of her past tweets being perceived as transphobic; however, it has since been revealed that Rowling chose not to be in the special. Many cast members have conveyed serious disagreement with some of Rowling’s beliefs; regardless, there was a lot of respect paid to her during the special. While many people do not agree with Rowling in the slightest, there is no denying that she created an entire universe that lots of people have admired and loved for decades.
Whether you are a fan of Harry Potter or have never seen a single movie, the reunion is a must-watch. It will bring you back to the beginning of the film series and will show you how Harry Potter came to be the astonishing series it is today. The sentimental feeling viewers will receive when watching it is unreal and like nothing before. Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, a magical way to ring in the new year.
