Movie review: Turning Red

In 2022, Disney and Pixar released their current top hit Turning Red. This is a movie about Meilin Lee, a 13 year old girl torn between being an obedient daughter and the chaos of her youth. As if that wasn’t enough, when she gets too excited, she turns into a Red Panda. The story begins in a Chinatown community where Mei is dealing with puberty. This is a big part of this story as well as having moments as a teen to enjoy things, such as hanging out with friends, going to parties or concerts, and having an over-obsession with a popular singer.
The Soundtrack for Turning Red has been considered people’s favorite part of the movie. Songs such as “1 True Love” and “U Know What’s up” by 4Town, and “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child were included.
This film encourages curiosity, self control, compassion, and teamwork. This is a great movie to watch with your family; you can discuss a lot about the challenges that kids go through in their teens and how it’s difficult to grow up in some ways.
I interviewed two students at Lanier Highschool: Olivia Sander, and Abby Counter.
“My favorite part of the movie was when Mei’s grandma and aunts turned into their red pandas and they started chanting the ritual. Then Mei’s friends and 4 Town start singing to help with the ritual” stated Olivia Sander. I then asked what her favorite song from the movie was and why.
“My favorite song was “Nobody like u” by 4 Town,” which is a popular band that Mei and her friends go to see in concert. The song to her was very “upbeat, fun, catchy, and very hard to forget.”
Olivia Sanders feels that she could definitely rewatch this movie. I asked her what she would do if she was in Mei’s place, who is the main protagonist, in this situation of overwhelming causes.
“If I was in Mei’s place, I wouldn’t have been able to hold in my emotions as long as she did. I would have exploded the moment my mother would start to compare me to others and talk about my friends infront of my face.”
“My favorite part was when Mei and her mom were walking through the forest after mei saying that her mom doesn’t have to be perfect.” said Abby Counter.
“My favorite song is “U Know What’s Up” by 4 Town, when we finally meet the popular band Mei and her friends adore. That song is just overall amazing”.
“I definitely would watch this movie again, I really enjoy the movie and I feel what Mei feels about growing up. I would do the same thing as Mei did in the movie, and that is exactly how I would feel in that exact situation.” stated Abby Counter.
“Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child plays when Mei finally gets comfortable with herself as the Red Panda and starts coming into her own, accepting that she can control when she transforms.
Overall Turning red is about a daughter and mother coming to embrace change even if that means they must say goodbye to the relationship they once had. Mei and her mother, along with Mei’s family and friends, are all comfortable with the decision Mei has made in the end.
