New york governor Cuomo steps down from position due to sexual assault allegations

Governor Andrew Cuomo is facing multiple allegations of sexual assault and has since resigned his position as governor of New York, leading to a new milestone for the world of politics and female empowerment: the first female governor of New York has been sworn into office.

11 women, some of those being state employees, have come forward and accused Cuomo of making sexual comments, inappropriately groping them, and kissing them without consent. These allegations have caused chaos among the Democratic party, causing many of Cuomo’s allies to turn against him.

Cuomo explained his resignation in a speech on August 24th. In this speech, he denied accusations from all 11 women, but he apologized to anyone he has made feel uncomfortable when in his presence. He conveyed this by saying, “The most serious allegations made against me had no credible factual basis in the report. And there is a difference between alleged improper conduct and concluding sexual harassment. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not to say that there are not 11 women who I truly offended. There are. And for that I deeply, deeply apologize.”

In addition to his political career, Cuomo came forward and said these allegations have affected him personally. He went on to say, “And let me say this on a personal note. In many ways, I see the world through the eyes of my daughters, Cara, Mariah and Michaela. They are 26 and 26, twins, and 23. . . I have sat on the couch with them, hearing the ugly accusations for weeks. I’ve seen the look in their eyes, and the expression on their faces, and it hurt.”

At the moment, Cuomo still has a possibility of facing charges. Many of the reported cases have yet to be investigated further, hence why Cuomo has not been criminally charged yet.

The Democratic party is still in shock by these allegations, and since Cuomo’s resignation, a new governor has been sworn in. Kathy Hochul is the 57th governor of New York and is currently making history as the first female governor of New York.
